Before carrying out any update/upgrade on your device,  i strongly advice you consider  backing up all of your personal data on your smartphone, if you don't know how to do that, I strongly advice you check out this post on how to carry out nandroid backup on your android phone before flashing ROM. You also endeavor to enable the USB Debugging  or check if it's already enabled. Lastly, make sure you have your Gionee Marathon M5 fully charged. Therefore, you can be sure that the phone can stay on during the whole process. 

How to Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM on Gionee Marathon M5 
1. Download the ROM from the source below. Note that there are three parts of it. Please download all of them. After you download all of the files, put them all under the same folder. Then all you have to do is to double click the first part and the rest will combine automatically (you have to have WinRar program in order to do so) 
 The ROM File size is big, so I split the file into 3 parts: 

Download ROM Part 1 : ROM Part 1 or via Mirror 
Download ROM Part 2 : ROM Part 2 or via Mirror 
Download ROM Part 3 : ROM Part 3 or via Mirror 
 2. Visit Google Play Store and then download and install the ROM Manager on your Gionee Marathon M5. Alternatively, you can try using alternative application such as Jrummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).   3. Next, from the rom manager download and install the Clockwork Mod Recovery on your Gionee Marathon M5.   4. Connect the phone to your PC via USB cable. Copy the Rom.zip file you downloaded to you system to your phone’s root memory card.   5. Restart the phone in Recovery Mode using the ROM Manager. After the restart is completed, open the ROM Manager again and backup your personal information.   6. Go to Recovery Menu and perform the total data erase. If you are confused and doesn't know how to do that, I strongly advice you go through this post on how to install custom rom via CMW. After that, go back to Recovery Main Menu and choose the Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate to the folder in which your Rom.zip is located, and follow the directions for installing Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Gionee Marathon M5. As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Gionee Marathon M5 device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow.   7. Done  Below are some pictures of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
